Human Biofluid Samples
Several types of biofluids can be used for medical research and diagnosis. The most used biofluids are blood, urine, CSF, saliva, and semen.
Urine: A commonly studied biofluid that can provide information about kidney function, electrolyte balance, and metabolic disorders. Urine can be collected in a sterile container by either midstream collection or catheterization.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF): A clear fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be collected through a lumbar puncture or spinal tap. A needle is inserted into the lower back and spinal canal to collect CSF during this procedure.
Saliva: A watery fluid that contains enzymes, electrolytes, and other substances. It can be collected by spitting into a sterile container or using a unique device stimulating saliva production.
Semen: A thick, white fluid that contains sperm and other substances. It can be collected through masturbation or a special condom during sexual intercourse.
